A Track A Day: Mala Ika

For LAGASTA’s ongoing series, we asked our friends to choose a favourite track or an album for these weird times, and share it with us along with a photo. A track a day keeps the bad vibes away. Today we welcome French DJ and Producer Mala Ika. Earlier her passion for digging electronic musique helps her become one of the founders of the Media Beweird and Label Weirdos Records. Known for being workaholic and creative, she provides a spicy and original music. After few years and a lockdown intense, She came back with a new Indie dance style and vision. Mala Ika shares with us one of her favourite records, Grace Jones’ classic 1981 LP “Nightclubbing”.

In her own words: “I was a child when I heard for the first time this album. As I remembered, I was very curious about who is that woman: a model, a singer, an actress? She was born in a little Caribbean island and how can her being successful and thinking out of the box at this time? This album is not only music, this is a symbol. ‘Pull up the Βumper’, ‘Νightclubbing’, and my favourite one ‘I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango)’ were music lessons for me. Why? Because, the influence are multiple, the culture and the idea of what music must be are strong. From my point of view, music is a langage and a way to share feelings with people according to what you are as humain being (feelings, story, culture, knowledge). And ‘I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango)’ is what music mean to me. It’s like a melting pot of past, future, rework and creativity. You already feel and know the melody before putting it in instruments or vst.”
